Mesut Ozil and Sokratis Papastathopoulos were removed from the list of 25 players in the Europa League group stage by coach Mikel Arteta.
Coach Arteta is expected to use the Europa League group stage to give opportunities to players who are not playing much in the Premier League and League Cup. However, he was forced to disqualify Ozil and Sokratis because of the regulations to register only 17 players trained outside the club’s academy.
According to Goal, the removal of Ozil from the squad is not too surprising. The German player has not played a minute since the tournament returned in June. However, Ozil is currently Arsenal’s highest-paid player. (£ 350,000 / week) so his disqualification still receives attention.
Ozil continues to play and earn the highest salary at Arsenal
The decision to remove Ozil from the Europa League squad “Gunners” came just a day after the player announced his willingness to pay Jerry Quy, who played Gunnersaurus, the Arsenal mascot for 27 years.
The last time Ozil played for Arsenal was a victory over West Ham in March. It was the last match before the tournament was suspended due to the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic. He has not been in the “Gunners” mainline this season, not even in the League Cup.
In the Europa League this season, Arsenal are in Group B with teams Dundalk, Rapid Vienna, and Molde. Coach Mikel Arteta has used very cautious words when talking about Ozil. However, everyone understands that the German midfielder has almost no future at Arsenal.
When Arsenal had completely lost to Liverpool in the third round of the Premier League, Ozil continued to not be on the list to register to play.
A week ago, Coach Arteta admitted it was “very difficult” for Ozil to step into the current Arsenal squad. This is not because the German midfielder is incompetent. It is because his form has been in constant decline since the end of last season. The last time Ozil played for Arsenal was March 7.
In terms of skill, Ozil is still one of the best-attacking midfielders in world football. Looking at Arsenal midfield, we see that if at his best, Ozil is still on a different level. However, the superficiality in training and the will to strive left the German midfielder left behind by Arteta.
